A man from Gleason Tennessee

This is my Mother.Annie Belle Brummitt Ray She was born in 1929 in Gleason Probably in the same house that is in the background. She died in Flint Michigan in 1983. That would be the same house I was born in more than likely. She was the Daughter of Henry Brummitt, and Verna Smyth. She deserves a spot on my website, and she got it! She and I made homemade apple turnovers when times got hard. We cut apples and I laid them on a sheet, on the tin roof of the Coal shed to dry in the Hot Tennessee sun. She even taught me to do some embroidery work. This came in handy later in life believe it or not! I learned how to sew buttons on my clothes and how to patch a pair of Old jeans when I wore the knees out. I think I learned how to cut up a chicken too.

I learned how to make gravy from her. I learned how to cook beans, and (with practice) I can still make biscuits. I learned how to start a fire in the old cook stove, and a lot of other things also. I can survive on very little food if I have to, and I have my Mother to thank for a lot of it.

She use to say to me" When you are thirsty, there is nothing better than a cold drink of good water"!

This is my Grandfather Henry T. Brummitt 1881/1952. I believe he is the reason for my being able to make veggies grow! We called him "Pappy". He was the center of my young world back then. When he passed away it was a terrible experience for me. There is so much I wish I could ask him! When I get to heaven, First I want to see Jesus, and then I want to see "Pappy"!

About Bud Ray

Bud Ray I was born Harley (BUD) Ray in Gleason ,Tennessee on January 15th in the year of 1940. My hometown is famous for Sweet Potatoes, Ball Clay, Gordon Stoker of the Jordonairs Quartet , Mike Snider of the Grand Ol' Opry, and yours truly-Bud Ray I have put off starting a web-site long enough and decided that today is the day! I don't know much about websites, but I have to start somewhere! Some people think I brag a little too much. I know one person in West Tennessee that says that. He may be jealous for all I know, because he doesn't have anything to brag about, so all I can say to that is"eat your heart out" Because I may brag on this, my very own first website!.....Bud Ray

The two people above are my grandparents on the Ray side, Robert and Jenny Ray. Robert was alive from 1876/1953, and she also. She died in the spring and he in the autumn of 1953. Two fine people, filled with love for everyone, and  remembered in our hearts forever. They lived in a run down shack in Henry County Tennessee. I loved to visit them there in those years.

In the picture above is Little Harley(Bud) Ray with my Grandfather and Grandmother Ray. We called them "Pap" and "Mammy". These two were also the "center" of my world and I loved them very much.

"Mammy" use to churn the milk and make butter, and what was left over was called "Buttermilk". She would dip the butter out and put it in a "Butter mold", and there was always tiny bits of butter left in the milk. She would then bake a large thick "Pone" of  the best cornbread you ever laid a lip on! Then she would cut me a slice and pour me a large glass of Buttermilk, and call me to the table! I loved "Mammy" for that, and I knew that she loved me too! I will always have those "Golden" memories of her! I still love that cornbread and buttermilk, and I am almost 70 years old.

The picture above is my father John D. Ray and myself about 1942. He was my buddy, and he is the one who started calling me "Bud". My parents were "loving" parents, and I was their only child, so they bestowed that love on me! Was I spoiled? Yes I was and the feeling was wonderful! So I spoil my grandchildren the same way I spoiled my Children also! I miss all my Grandparents and my Parents also!

This my Father in overalls Back about 1942 maybe. Dad totally hated Herbert Hoover, who was president during the hardest times of his life. Hoover made a speech on the radio in those hard years, and said, "All the working man needs is a dollar a day and a pair of overalls"! A lot of people hated Hoover for the very same reason I suppose! Poor folks don't forget things like that!

The picture above is the old Ray/Brummitt home place where I was born. The cudzoo vines took it over along with the snakes, lizards, mice and no telling what else I drove by in the 1960's and took one last photo. Cudzoo is the vine that ate up the southland.

Here's 5 healthy lads! We call em' (Lovingly) THE WRECKING CREW!!
